Getting Started on Your Walking Journey

The Tramore promenade is one of the friendliest walks you'll find along the coast. It's 2.2 kilometres of relatively flat terrain, mostly paved, with plenty of spots to rest. We've designed this guide for anyone taking their first steps on this beautiful stretch of Irish coastline.

You don't need special gear or experience. What you do need is comfortable shoes, a little bit of time, and maybe a light jacket depending on the weather. Most people complete the full route in about 45 minutes to an hour, though there's absolutely no rush. You'll set your own pace.

Understanding the Route

The main promenade stretches from the beach entrance near the Majestic Hotel to the far end of Strand Hill. It's 2.2 kilometres one way, which means about 4.4 kilometres if you're doing a complete loop. But here's the thing — you don't have to do the whole thing on your first visit. Many people walk to the halfway point, sit for a bit, and head back.

Surface: Smooth tarmac and concrete paving, with some sand patches near the beach entrance
Terrain: Completely flat — no hills or uneven sections to worry about
Width: Wide enough for two people walking side by side comfortably

Where to Rest Along the Way

You'll find benches scattered throughout the promenade. They're not just for resting — they're perfect for stopping to enjoy the view, have a chat with someone you meet, or simply catch your breath.

  • First 500m: Two benches on the right side, facing the beach
  • Midway point (1.1km): Three benches clustered together, one with shelter from the wind
  • Final section: Four benches scattered near Strand Hill, with views toward the cliffs

In total, there are about 14 benches along the main route. Most are well-maintained and have clear views of the ocean. We've noticed the benches near the 800m mark get a lot of sun in the afternoon — great if you want warmth, but bring a hat if the sun's strong.

Best Times to Walk

The promenade is open year-round, and there's honestly no bad time to visit. That said, a few things are worth knowing. Early mornings between 8 and 10 AM are quieter and you'll have more space to yourself. The sun's lower at these hours too, which means fewer glaring reflections off the wet paving.

Afternoons get busier, especially on weekends. If you prefer fewer crowds, aim for weekday mornings or late afternoons after 4 PM. Summer months (June to August) are warmest, but you'll need sun protection. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures without extreme heat or cold. Winter's absolutely walkable too — just bring proper waterproofing and layers.

Your First Walk Awaits

The promenade isn't intimidating or complicated. It's a straightforward, beautiful walk that's been designed to be accessible and enjoyable. You're not racing anyone. There's no finish line you need to reach. The whole point is to get outside, breathe the sea air, and move at your own pace.

Pick a morning when the weather looks reasonable, wear comfortable shoes, and head down to the beach entrance. Walk as far as you feel good, rest as much as you need, and enjoy the views. That's it. That's the walk. Come back when you're ready to do it again, and you'll know the route better. You'll notice new things — the way the light changes, which benches have the best views, where the best shelter is. Enjoy it.
