Mairead O'Sullivan
Senior Leisure & Accessibility Specialist
hydrogistic Ltd
Specialising in senior-friendly outdoor recreation, accessible coastal walking routes, and Tramore's unique promenade and dune ecosystems
A Career Dedicated to Accessible Outdoor Experiences
Mairead's journey into senior leisure began in 2010 when she worked as a community health facilitator with Waterford's Active Retirement Association. She noticed a significant gap in accessible, well-documented walking routes for older adults. That observation sparked everything that came after.
After completing her Exercise & Health Sciences degree at Waterford Institute of Technology in 2012, she spent six years coordinating outdoor activity programmes for various age-care organisations. But it's her specialisation in coastal environments—particularly Tramore's distinctive landscape—that's become her signature work. She's conducted over 200 guided walks and consulted with local environmental groups on accessibility improvements, learning the terrain in a way that only comes from experience.
What drives her work is straightforward: age shouldn't limit people's connection to natural spaces. She believes every senior deserves access to Ireland's coastline—safely, enjoyably, and without unnecessary barriers. At hydrogistic Ltd, she translates 14 years of field experience into evidence-based content that bridges the gap between outdoor recreation and accessible senior care.

Practical Wisdom From 14 Years in the Field
Mairead doesn't work from theory. Everything she writes comes from thousands of hours spent on Tramore's promenade and dune paths with real seniors—watching what works, what doesn't, and why. She's seen what stops people from walking: confusing directions, unexpected hills, missing rest points, poor weather information. She's also seen what encourages them: clear milestones, achievable distances, interesting details about the landscape.
"Age shouldn't limit people's connection to natural spaces. My job is to remove the barriers that keep seniors off the coast."
Mairead O'Sullivan
Her guides aren't generic. They're specific to Tramore's unique conditions—the tidal patterns that affect beach access, the seasonal wind exposure, the exact location of every bench and public facility. She's documented over 200 walks, tested routes in different seasons, and gathered feedback from hundreds of older walkers. That's not casual experience. That's expertise built through repetition and genuine care for getting details right.
She's also realistic. She doesn't pretend every senior can walk 5 kilometres. Instead, she offers options: the short loop for those managing arthritis, the scenic route for mobile walkers, the flat promenade for someone recovering from illness. Every walk comes with honest assessment of what you're getting into.
Accuracy
Every detail matters. Distances, gradients, rest points—all verified through personal experience.
Inclusivity
Routes designed for varying mobility levels, not just the very fit. Options for everyone.
Honesty
Clear about challenges and limitations. She won't oversell a route's difficulty or accessibility.
Safety First
Risk assessment and practical precautions built into every recommendation.
